Tibet

Tibet, the country is nestled between the Himalayas in the south and the Kunlun Shan in the north, conjures images of blue skies, flapping prayer flags and red-cheeked Tibetan monks. Tibet is a plateau region in Asia, north of the Himalayas, and the home to the original Tibetan people and its related ethnic groups. With an average elevation of 4,900 meters (16,000 ft), it is the highest region on Earth and has in recent decades increasingly been referred to as the "Roof of the World". Before Tibet got into the limelight, the term Roof of the World was applied to the Pamirs.

Tibet has the unique topography which makes it rich in travel resources. It has the highest mountains in the world Mt. Qomolangma 8,850 meters; the largest canyon in the world Yarlung Zangbo River Great Canyon with a total depth 5,382 meters; the largest scale of vertical eco-system zones, from the highest point on the earth 8,850 m, to the bottom of valley 900 meters elevation. There are numerous lakes sprinkling on this beautiful land and several famous rivers in Asia originate here. It is considered as a paradise for the travelers who like biking, trekking, rafting, mountaineering or other adventure tours to the nature.

Tibet occupies about 471,700 square miles of the plateaus and mountains of Central Asia, including Mount Everest. The country is bordered by the Chinese provinces of Tsinghai to the northeast, Szechwan to the east, and Yunnan to the southeast; Myanmar, India, Bhutan, and Nepal to the south; the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir to the west; and the Uighur Autonomous Region of Sinkiang to the northwest. Lhasa is the capital city.

Lhasa
Lhasa is the religious, cultural & economic hub of Tibet. Potala palace, the 13 storey, 1,000 room palace of the Dalai Lama; the monasteries of Drepung & Sera, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama, Norbulinka; and the Jokhang, the holiest shrine in Tibet etc are some vital places to see in Lhasa.

Samye Monastery Sitting beautiful on the foot of Mt. Haibu Rishen, Samye Monastery is located in the tranquil Shannan Region, to the north of Tsangpo River. This is the first monastery in entire Tibet to be built comprising with the three Buddhist idols, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. This monastery is hugely popular with all Buddhist pilgrims from around the world. And the beauty of its construction beckons tourist who comes to Tibet.

Shigatse
Shigatse is most famous for its Tashilumpo Monastery – the seats of the Panchen Lama, who is considered as the re-embodiment of the Buddha of Endless Enlightenment. The matters of attention inside this monastery built in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama are: the relics of Sakyamuni, the Hall of Maitreya & a mind-boggling collection of Thankas, frescoes & statues. There is a busy ‘free’ market at the bottom of the ruins of the Shigatse Fortress, where one can buy local handicrafts, entrenched with coral & turquoise, Tibetan draggers, Chinese porcelain & yak butter.

Tashilhunpo Monastery
Tashilhunpo Monastery is situated in Shigatse around 250 km away from the capital of Tibet Lhasa. Situated on the foot of Drolmari, the configuration is one of the six huge monasteries of Gelugpa in Tibet which was built by 1st Dalai Lama in the year 1447. It stands on a whooping area of around 300,000 sq. m and is also known as a seat of the Panchen Lama who is regard as to be the subsequent most important dutiful leader of Tibet.

Norbulingka Palace Norbulingka Palace, situated in the west side of Lhasa is just around a km southwest of Potala Palace. Norbulingka sense 'Treasure Park' covers an area of around 360000 sq. m. and is considered to be the biggest man made garden in Tibet. You will be astonished to know that there are more than 370 rooms inside its premises. It is called summer palace because after the 7th Lama, Dalai Lamas used to visit here during summers to hold religious and government related activities. As a part of "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace", UNESCO added Norbulingka in its list of world heritage sites.

Potala Palace Potala Palace is located on Potala hills at an altitude of 3,700-m. Situated in the center of Lhasa valley; it has been known as a World heritage site by UNESCO. Some say that the palace is praiseworthy enough to be included in the list of wonders of the world. Being one of the oldest structures in Tibet, Potala Palace has also become the most visited shrine in Tibet.

Sera Monastery
Sera refer to ‘hail stone’ in Tibetan language. Located at the foot of the Wudu hill to the north of Lhasa city, Sera Monastery encompasses of a immense sutra chanting hall, a college and 32 sections that covers 114,964 sq. mts. Founded by Jamchenchupje in 1419, Sera Monastery was famous for its fighting monks, who spent years perfecting the martial arts.

Drepung Monastery
Drepung monastry is sited at the end of the West Valley Mountain (Gyephel-Ou-Tse) about 10 kms from Lhasa. Drepung Monastery was built by Jamyang-Choje Tashi-Phiden in 1416 AD. Drepung is one of the six largest monasteries of the Gelupa sect & comprises of six main temples: Ganden Palace, Tsochen, Ngakpa, Losaling, Gomang & Dyeyang. The main remnants in these temples are image of Maitreya, Yamantaka, Mitrukpa, Sutrakangyur with golden letters, Thankas, Silk scrolls (which are very precious & are rarely seen in the world), various gilded statures, Buddhist scriptures & countless other cultural relics.

Jokhang Temple
Jokhang temple was constructed in 647 A.D and is the holy center of Tibet and the holiest destination for Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims. It houses the sitting figurine of Sakyamuni, when he was 12 years old. From dawn till dusk, one can see an astonishing display of hymning, prostrating pilgrims circumambulating the temple.

Khumbum Chorten Stupa
Khumbum Chorten Stupa is one of the eight Buddhist Stupas identified as Tashi Multi stupa that stood 42m high & was said to have 108 cells enclosing esteemed wall paintings & holy images amounting to 1,00,000 pieces of art. The Khumbum Chorten Stupa is located in Gyantse.

Yarlung Valley
Yarlung is the derivation of the Tibetans. The stone wares unearthed from Traduk & Yartu supplementary corroborate that the Yarlung is the crib of Tibetan civilization. Over quite a few thousands of years, Yarlung culture, as an important constituent of Tibetan culture, has had a crash on the history of Tibet & the country as a whole. The Yarlung River

Mt. Kailash Mt. Kailash presents probably the biggest paradox in tourism world and pilgrimage targets. It is the most prominent and divine place visited by the disciples across the boarders. The mountain is an important religious destination for many religions like Jainism, Buddhism, and Hinduism and holds different implication to different religion just like the various names it has. The mountain towers up to 22,000 feet above sea level and is measured to be one of the sturdy high rises to climb or even reach.
